I’m using Strava to track my walk, run, and bicycle activities. Luckily for me, Strava has built-in integration with Apple HealthKit, so my daily Active Energy (calories used during exercise) is automatically copied into the Health app. There’s just one tiny problem…
Every time I update an activity any way in the Strava app, it gets copied to HealthKit again. So if I update the title, the active energy is recorded in duplicate. If I update the description, it’s now in triplicate. Add a photo or two… it keeps going. Now a morning walk might show up as 900 kcal burned. Yeah right! 🤦♂️ This makes my Active Energy data totally useless.
Luckily it seems that Strava got the Workouts portion of their data export working correctly, so I can just disable the export of broken data and leave the rest intact.
HealthKit provides an alluring promise that all of my data can be consolidated into one place, and by combining that data I might be able to find better insights. However, my actual experience has been extremely disappointing because third-party vendors just don’t seem to get it.
